Hark! It’s the final hymn in Bill Kemp’s Advent series on four hymns of the season. Come join him to sing glory in anticipation of the newborn King!
Remember fish wars, now it’s sign wars. This week’s Wired Word will take up the discussion of a sign, posted on one side of the Lincoln Tunnel, sponsored by a group called American Atheists, which shows a nativity scene with a star overhead and three wise men on camels approaching, and proclaims, “You KNOW it’s a Myth. This Season, Celebrate REASON!”
As you might expect, when motorists get through the tunnel and emerge into New York, they’re greeted by another billboard, this one from the Catholic League. This sign also shows Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus, and reads, “You know it’s real. This Season, Celebrate Jesus.”
Should we respond to such signs? Is the fact that some people object to Christmas really that big a deal? Is battling atheists standing up for one’s faith or does it simply feed their feeling of being an oppressed minority?
Finally you are always welcome to join the youth in their ongoing discussion around Rob Bell’s Nooma videos and the fresh issues they bring up each week.
Advent blessings,
Bill
